Suggested Practice Drills Here are just some of many! Hit The Floor - Select a player who must retrieve a ball thrown base line to mid court before it goes out of bounds. Progressively toss the ball farther and farther away until the player is forced to "hit the floor" to save the ball.Knock Out - Line your players up on the foul line and give player 1 and 2 a ball. Each player in turn shoots and retrieves his ball for a quick put back. The next player shoots in turn immediately after the preceding player, again retrieving his ball for a put back. If player number two makes his shot before player number 1, player 1 is "knocked out" and must sit. Last man standing wins. Offensive Defense - Set up two lines. Toss a ball ahead on the court. The first two players in line go for the ball. The player who wins the ball drives to the hoop. The other player sets up for defense. Reverse on return. Box Out - Set up 3 inside re-bounders and 3 outside. One player shoots from the foul line. Misses must be re-bounded. The 3 inside players must box out and work for the put back. Switch roles. Animal Ball - Set up one foul shooter and three re-bounders. The three re-bounders can do anything they want short of murder and mayhem in order to win the ball and get a put back as long as the ball does not hit the floor. Whoever puts the ball in gets to shoot. Dribble Drill I - Everyone lines up on the court looking at you the coach and begins to dribble. Using hand gestures only, you move them forward and back, left and right as they dribble. This teaches them to dribble with their heads up. Dribble Drill II - Everyone gets on the court in a confined area and begins to dribble. Each player tries to poke another player’s ball away. Last man dribbling wins. Shoot to Win - Line up two groups with one ball each on a spot equally distant from the hoop. Each group begins to shoot and retrieve their miss using one shot per turn. The first group to 10 wins. The loser does pushups. The winners get to supervise. Vary the shot each round. Monkey in the Middle - Form a circle with one player in the middle. Practice different forms of passing with the monkey in the middle as a chaser. No one can pass to the person next to them. When the chaser steals a pass he goes to the circle and the passer who misfired goes to the center. |
